inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Sudjatmiko, a member of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), proposed that all vulnerable railway crossings be guarded by certified officers as a short-term solution to minimize accidents involving trains and vehicles crossing the tracks.

According to Sudjatmiko, massively controlling crossings and disturbances around railway tracks has the potential to draw public opposition.

At the very least, safety standards must be implemented at these crossings, especially since Indonesian road user discipline is still relatively low.

"The short-term solution is to fully guard vulnerable crossings by certified guards. This certification is indeed required," Sudjatmiko said during a discussion on the East Bekasi train accident at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Thursday (4/30/2026).

He stated that there are many illegal level crossings still active in Indonesia.

According to Law Number 23 of 2007 concerning Railways, he stated that unauthorized level crossings should be closed.

On the other hand, he said that train users are increasing all the time. Therefore, safety must be prioritized.

Meanwhile, for medium- and long-term solutions, Sudjatmiko requested that the government conduct a national railway safety audit, along with track repairs.

He said that sometimes, the asphalt or concrete at railroad crossings is damaged, making it difficult for vehicles to stop in the middle of the tracks.

Sudjatmiko also requested that as many flyovers or underpasses be built as possible along railway lines, especially on routes with high train traffic.
