inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection and the National Karate-do Institute signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen synergy through karate self-defense training for women and children.
"We appreciate efforts to improve self-defense capacity for women and children. Self-defense skills are crucial for equipping women and children in emergency situations and enhancing their ability to anticipate various forms of violence, both in public spaces and in the domestic sphere," explained Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, Ratna Susianawati, on Tuesday (5/19/2026).
This effort is crucial considering that the 2024 National Survey of Women's Life Experiences (SPHPN) and the National Survey of Children and Adolescents' Life Experiences (SNPHAR) indicate that rates of violence against women and children remain quite high.
She stated that cross-sector collaboration is a crucial step in creating a safe and inclusive environment and supporting the strengthening of women's and children's capacities to become more resilient in facing various forms of violence.
"Let's make karate not just a martial art, but also a means of building character, discipline, and creativity. We hope this collaboration can provide real benefits for women and children, who make up two-thirds of Indonesia's population. We hope that every woman and child will have the ability to protect themselves from various forms of violence," explained Ratna.
As a follow-up to the MoU, the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection and the National Karate-do Institute also signed a cooperation agreement covering the development of self-defense skills for women and children, the integration of gender perspectives and children's rights into training modules, and the strengthening of human resource capacity that is responsive to gender and children's rights.
