Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian government urged Malaysian authorities to assure justice for Meriance Kabu, a migrant worker from East Nusa Tenggara who was severely abused by her employer in 2014.

Judha Nugraha, the Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection and Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Tuesday (30/7/2024) that the trial of her case is taking place in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, with a verdict reading scheduled.

“The Foreign Ministry has facilitated Meriance Kabu’s presence at today’s trial,” he said, as quoted by antaranews.com..

The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has appointed a watching brief lawyer to oversee the proceedings.

“We hope this trial will result in justice for Meriance Kabu,” Nugraha added.

Kabu, a victim of human trafficking, suffered extensive abuse, including facial bruising, damage to her left ear, and a torn lip from repeated beatings. She needed surgery and continues to receive serious medical care.

Kabu was rescued by police following reports from neighbors. Although the case was initially dismissed, diplomatic efforts have led to its reopening in early 2024.
