Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) estimated the country’s illegal drug trade could be worth up to Rp 524 trillion (around USD 33 billion) annually, raising alarms about its impact on national development.

“The threat of drugs is becoming increasingly complex, both in terms of prevalence and its long-term consequences for our people,” said BNN Principal Secretary Inspector General Tantan Sulistyana on Tuesday (13/5/2025). “That’s why our 2025–2029 strategy focuses on strengthening resources and infrastructure to confront this issue head-on.”

The strategy, aligned with the “Golden Indonesia 2045” vision, aims to build a drug-free generation by prioritizing prevention, surveillance at coastal and border regions, international cooperation, and institutional reform, as reported by antaranews.com.

Tantan also highlighted serious challenges such as limited manpower, infrastructure, and funding.

Planning Ministry advisor Noor Marzuki compared the Rp524 trillion estimate to the Rp71 trillion allocated for the government’s 2025 free school meals program, calling the drug trade “a massive threat to the future of Indonesia’s children.”
