Inp.polri.go.id - Timika. Indonesia has formally lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the European Union (EU) for imposing countervailing duties and antidumping duties on stainless steel cold-rolled flat (SSCRF) that negatively impact the country.
Bara Krishna Hasibuan, Special Staff to the Minister of Trade for International Agreements, revealed that the dispute centers around the EU's imposition of additional import duties on SSCRF.
"This is our third case. They imposed additional import duties on the EU," said Bara during a discussion in Timika, Central Papua, on Sunday (3/12/2023).
The EU has levied countervailing duties on SSCRF imports from India and Indonesia. Indonesia faces countervailing duties of 21%, while India faces a 7.5% duty. Additionally, the EU imposed antidumping duties ranging from 10.2% to 31.5% since 2021.
Bara explained that Indonesia has been accused of receiving subsidies from the Chinese government due to the establishment of Chinese-owned steel companies in the country. The EU views this as an unfair practice, akin to purchasing Chinese products but with the production located in Indonesia, subsidized by the Chinese government.
He highlighted the increasing demand for steel exports to Europe at present. However, the imposition of countervailing duties and antidumping duties could result in annual losses for Indonesia amounting to 40 million euros, or approximately Rp569.1 billion.
