Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi strongly condemned the increasing violence in Gaza by Israel, labeling it as a grave violation of humanit during an emergency UN General Assembly session in New York on Thursday (26/10/2023). Minister Retno called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the protection of civilians, and the facilitation of humanitarian aid. In her speech, she expressed her disappointment with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for failing to take necessary actions. On October 24th, 2023, Russia and China vetoed a U.S.-proposed draft resolution in the UN Security Council, which called for a pause in fighting, protection of civilians, and an end to the arming of Palestinian resistance groups. This proposal surprised many with its initial wording, affirming Israel's right to self-defense and urging Iran to stop supplying weapons to Palestinian resistance groups while omitting a call for a humanitarian pause in aid access. Russian Ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, accused the U.S. of proposing a resolution that would allow an Israeli ground offensive in Gaza while letting Palestinian children suffer. Following these two vetoes, the UNSC voted on a Russian-drafted resolution, seeking a humanitarian ceasefire and the rescission of Israeli orders for Gaza civilians to relocate southward in anticipation of a potential ground offensive. However, the Russian resolution did not receive sufficient support, falling short of the minimum nine votes required to pass, and it wasn't vetoed by the permanent UNSC members. With the Security Council at an impasse, the 193-member UN General Assembly is scheduled to vote next Friday on a draft ceasefire resolution submitted by Arab countries. (ar/inp/pr/nm)
