Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Directorate General of Immigration confirmed that passports issued to children with dual citizenship are subject to special rules that limit their validity period.
“An Indonesian passport for a dual-citizen child cannot exceed the legal age limit by which the child must declare their chosen nationality,” said Immigration spokesperson Achmad Nur Saleh on Wednesday (24/9/2025), as reported by antaranews.com.
Under the 2006 Citizenship Law, children with dual nationality, typically from mixed marriages between Indonesian and foreign citizens, must choose their citizenship after turning 18 or once married. The law allows a three-year grace period, meaning the final deadline is by age 21.
For example, if a dual-citizen child applies for a passport at 18, the document may only be valid for three years. Parents must also register the child’s status before 18 and provide additional documents, including the foreign parent’s immigration permit.
Authorities urged families to comply to avoid complications with travel and civil records.
