Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia and Malaysia are exploring a prisoner exchange agreement as part of broader legal and correctional cooperation. 

“We are open to exploring prisoner exchange with Malaysia—if both parties agree, we’ll proceed to technical discussions,” said the Deputy for Immigration and Corrections, I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram, in a statement on Tuesday (22/4/2025),  

He noted Indonesia's experience in transferring foreign inmates back to their home countries.

Malaysia’s Director of International and Prisoner Transfer Division, Zulia, welcomed the idea, expressing interest in learning from Indonesia’s partnerships with the Philippines, Australia, and France. 

She confirmed Malaysia’s openness to repatriate Indonesian inmates under certain conditions, especially those who are elderly, ill, or facing humanitarian concerns.
