Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin has announced plans to transform Morotai Island, North Maluku, into a world-class international military training facility catering to land, sea, and air maneuvers.
“Morotai's existing World War II defense infrastructure will be revitalized to create a premier site for joint exercises with global partners, including those from across continents,” he said on Thursday (12/3/2026), following high-level security talks with Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles.
The project serves as a strategic tool for military diplomacy, opening Indonesia’s defense landscape to international cooperation while maintaining national sovereignty.
Minister Marles confirmed that Australia will dispatch a military survey team to Morotai by year-end to explore infrastructure support under the Australia-Indonesia Defense Cooperation Agreement. While the facility remains an Indonesian Military (TNI)-owned asset, it is expected to host multilateral drills, fostering regional stability through shared training environments and enhanced interoperability between the two defense forces.
