Inp.polri.go.id - Phnom Penh.  The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh reported a massive surge in citizens fleeing online gambling and scam syndicates, with 1,440 individuals seeking refuge between 16 and 20 January 2026.

This unprecedented influx came after intensified crackdowns by Cambodian authorities, highlighting a sharp escalation in human trafficking cases compared to previous years.

"Local law enforcement trends suggest that the flow of arriving citizens will continue for the foreseeable future," the Embassy said Wednesday (21/1/2026), as cited by antaranews.com.

Most victims arrived without passports or valid visas after escaping various scam hubs across Cambodia. In response, the Embassy has initiated the massive issuance of Emergency Travel Documents (SPLP) and is providing medical care to those in need.

Indonesian diplomats are currently negotiating with Cambodian Immigration to secure overstay fine waivers and expedite deportations. Authorities urge all remaining victims to report immediately, warning against fraudulent third-party schemes claiming to represent the Indonesian government.
