Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP) and the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) announced joint efforts to formulate a comprehensive regulatory framework regarding the use of kratom (mitragyna speciosa) to prevent substance abuse, official sources confirmed in Jakarta on Monday (2/11/2026).
"We need a clear regulation so that kratom, which has legitimate medicinal potential, is not misused and turned into a hazardous substance that threatens our younger generation," said INP Chief General Suyudi Ario Seto following a bilateral meeting with BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar at the INP Headquarters.
BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar reiterated that both institutions are aligning their supervisory mechanisms to balance natural resource development with public health protection. While kratom has traditional health applications, unmonitored consumption poses serious risks including dependency, hallucinations, and nervous system toxicity, prompting ongoing vigilance from law enforcement and anti-narcotics authorities.
