Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has confirmed it will no longer sink or destroy seized illegal fishing vessels to protect marine health.

Director General of Maritime and Fisheries Resource Surveillance, Pung Nugroho Saksono, said on Friday (2/8/2024)  that sinking ships creates environmental hazards by turning them into marine debris.

The new approach supports the "Month of Love for the Sea" program, which focuses on cleaning up ocean waste rather than adding to it, according to antaranews.com.

Instead of destruction, the ministry plans to repurpose seized vessels for educational use, as fishing boats if feasible, or as patrol and logistics vessels. The shift aims to utilize resources positively while avoiding further marine pollution.
