Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, clarified on Monday (27/4/2026) that the government is not involved in recent legal reports filed against activists and academics.
Speaking at the Presidential Palace, he said that such reports are the result of private legal actions by citizens or organizations.
"The complainant is not the government. Those reporting are members of the public or organizations," Minister Yusril said as reported by antaranews.com. "Essentially, the government cannot prohibit this because it is every person's right to report another individual."
He explained that police are legally obligated to follow up on every report to avoid potential pre-trial lawsuits. He further denied allegations of government-led criminalization, asserting that President Prabowo has repeatedly emphasized the importance of academic freedom and public criticism. He maintained that the legal processes currently unfolding are standard procedures initiated by the community, not under state instruction.
