The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) has reported a volcanic eruption with the release of volcanic ash reaching approximately 1,000 meters from the crater of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara on Wednesday (27/12/2023)
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki observation post officer Anselmus Bobyson Lamanepa said the eruption occurred at 5.57 am, with a maximum amplitude of 37 millimeters and a duration of 214 seconds.
"The observed ash column is grey with thick intensity towards the north," he said..
Anselmus advised people around the volcano to refrain from activities and stay within a two-kilometer radius of the crater's center, antaranews.com reported.
He also urged the public to stay away from the gas vents around the crater to avoid possible exposure to toxic gasses.
Mount Lewotobi is a twin volcano located in the south-eastern part of Flores Island. It consists of two peaks, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan.
Since 17 December 2023, the status of the active volcano, with an elevation of 1,584 metres above sea level, has been at level II or alert.
PVMBG monitors Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki visually and instrumentally from the observation post located in Pululera village, Wulanggitang district, East Flores regency, East Nusa Tenggara.
