Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has identified a new species of tree frog endemic to Sulawesi, named Rhacophorus boeadii. The species was found in Central Sulawesi’s Mount Katopasa and West Sulawesi’s Mount Gandang Dewata.

“This medium-sized frog has unique features like a sloping male snout, rough dorsal skin with white spots, and distinct white markings along the body,” said BRIN herpetologist Amir Hamidy on Wednesday (11/6/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.

Named in honor of the late Boeadi, a naturalist from the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, the discovery is based on morphological, genetic, and vocal analyses.

“We’re excited about this discovery as it highlights Sulawesi’s rich biodiversity,” Amir noted. However, he warned, “Its highland forest habitat is extremely vulnerable to environmental threats and climate change.”

Published in the Zootaxa journal, this finding highlights the Wallacean region’s critical role in amphibian endemism—and the urgent need for conservation.
