A joint search and rescue (SAR) team has recovered one body from the crash site of an ATR 42-500 aircraft operated by Indonesia Air Transport (IAT) on Mount Bulusaraung, Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, on Sunday (18/1/2026), as evacuation efforts continue under extreme terrain and weather conditions.
“One male victim was found in a ravine about 200 meters deep near aircraft debris, and the evacuation process is currently underway,” said Head of Makassar the National Search And Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Muhammad Arif Anwar, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The body was located at around 2.20 pm local time by SAR Unit 3 during a coordinated ground operation involving multiple rescue teams. Several aircraft fragments, including parts of the fuselage and seats, were also identified near the location. SAR operations are being carried out by four field units, supported by logistics teams deploying equipment via hiking routes.
The mission, coordinated by Basarnas Makassar, is ongoing to locate the remaining victims from the manifest of 11 people on board. Challenging weather, heavy rain, and dense fog continue to hamper access and visibility.
