inp.polri.go.id - Riau Island. The Riau Islands Regional Police, Water Police Unit successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle dozens of illegal cigarettes.
The Anis Madu-3009 Patrol Team of the Riau Islands Police Water Police secured a pompong ship carrying 48 cartons of cigarettes without excise stamps in Setokok Waters, Batam, Thursday (9/25/2025).
This arrest began with a public report about illegal cigarette shipping activity around Setokok.
Following up on this information, the Anis Madu-3009 KP team led by Second Police Inspector Jerry Ferdian Mafazi Artana, conducted patrols since Wednesday night (9/24/2025).
"Early this morning we found a suspicious gray pompong. After being chased and examined, the ship was known to be captained by S (41), a resident of Karimun, along with a crew member A (40), a resident of Batam," said Jerry on Saturday (9/27/2025).
From the examination, officers found dozens of boxes of illegal cigarettes hidden under fishing nets.
"We immediately secured the two suspected perpetrators along with the evidence for further examination," he explained.
The perpetrators were charged under Law Number 39 of 2007 concerning Excise (an amendment to Law Number 11 of 1995), specifically Article 54 in conjunction with Article 29.
