Inp.opolri.go.id - Jakarta. President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, has urged his administration to explore strategies in the ongoing battle against drug abuse. His call to action came during a Limited Cabinet Meeting on Drug Handling held at the Merdeka Palace on Monday (11/9/2023).
"I am calling upon all of us to search for revolutionary breakthroughs. Our goal is to effectively combat this grave issue of drug abuse," he said.
President Jokowi underscored several concerns associated with drug abuse in the country. According to the National Narcotics Board (BNN), approximately 1.95 percent of the population, equivalent to 3.6 million individuals, has been affected by drug abuse.
"This statistic demands our utmost attention. Drug-related cases have contributed to severe overcrowding within correctional facilities," he added.
In addition to addressing drug abuse through preventive measures and rehabilitation programs, the President emphasized the need for rigorous law enforcement to serve as a deterrent. He voiced his concerns about the involvement of some law enforcement officers in drug-related activities and called for swift and stringent legal actions against those implicated.
President Jokowi's directive is seen as a move to mobilize efforts towards innovative solutions, enhanced law enforcement, and a resolute approach to combat the menace of drug abuse in Indonesia. (ndt/hn/nm)
