Inp.polri.go.id - Surakarta. President Prabowo Subianto vowed to take firm action against rice adulteration practices that cost Indonesia up to Rp 100 trillion (approx. USD 6 billion) each year.
"Unscrupulous traders deceive the public by labeling regular rice as premium and raising prices arbitrarily. This is a serious offense," he said during the closing of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) Congress in Surakarta on Sunday (20/7/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com
The President ordered the Attorney General’s Office and the Indonesian National Police to investigate and prosecute those involved, calling it an act of economic subversion.
He also said that t reported government rice reserves had reached 4.2 million tons, which is considered an all-time high, with corn and rice production increasing by 30% and 48%, respectively.
Previously, the Agriculture Ministry reported 212 suspected fraudulent rice producers, with at least 10 already under police investigation.
