Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesian National Police (INP) Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo announced the dispatch of additional personnel to Rempang Island, Batam, following ecent protests in front of BP Batam Office as an effort to secure mediation and dialogue regarding the relocation process . "In response to the escalating situation, we have deployed four Company Level Units (SSK), equivalent to 400 personnel.  We continue to increase our personnel strength as needed to address the evolving threats.," he said to the press on Thursday (14/9/2023. "" The decision to send additional personnel was prompted by a dialogue between BP Batam and the local community earlier on Monday that ended in disarray, with no consensus reached. "There are still unresolved issues that require clarity. Therefore, comprehensive decisions are necessary," General Sigit said. In response to the violence during the protests, law enforcement officers at the scene took measures to secure the BP Batam office by erecting barricades. Unfortunately, several officers sustained injuries, and the BP Batam office building suffered damage. "We had no choice but to intervene and protect the premises, even if it meant risking our officers' safety," added the INP Chief. Beyond maintaining law and order, General Sigit stressed that the deployed personnel would assist in facilitating the local government's socialization efforts aimed at helping the community better understand BP Batam's development and relocation plans as the landowner. "The government, specifically BP Batam, is committed to transparently communicating the purpose and benefits of the relocation plan to the community," he said. (rd/hn/nm)
