Inp.polri.go.id - Sorong. The Ministry of Social Affairs has sent aid to the residents of Maybrat Regency in Southwest Papua Province by providing them 1,000 piglets from Jayapura to Sorong via a cargo plane, with the animals safely arriving at Domine Eduard Osok Airport on September 13, 2023. George Yarangga, Expert Staff to the Governor of Southwest Papua for Economics and Development, said, "This is a donation of seeds to the people of the Klasis Aifat Christian Gospel Church (GKI) to be bred." Drh. I Wayan Kertanegara, an official from the Southwest Papua Province Veterinary Authority, observed the piglets' arrival at the airport and attested to their good health and liveliness upon disembarking from the plane. He further explained that the piglets would be distributed among residents for breeding purposes, stressing the importance of caring for them until they reach the age of eight to nine months, at which point they will be ready for slaughter. The head of Sorong Class I Agricultural Quarantine Station also assured that the delivery of the piglets adhered to all relevant regulations, stating, "Each piglet was accompanied by quarantine documentation from its area of origin, and a thorough health assessment was conducted before transport." He added that following their unloading, the piglets were carefully disinfected, and selected samples were sent to a veterinary laboratory in Maros, South Sulawesi, for further examination. This precautionary measure ensures that the livestock sent do not carry any diseases. Drh. Firdiana Krisnaningsih, an official from the Southwest Papua Province Veterinary Authority, has taken on the responsibility of overseeing the distribution of these aid piglets to the recipients. The Ministry's assistance package consists of 500 pairs of piglets, destined for 500 families, each receiving one male and one female piglet. "The cages are taken care of by each recipient family," said Firdiana. "Because the amount of assistance is small, they have to prepare their own cages because it is not too burdensome," she added. Firdiana emphasized that it is the receiving families' duty to provide proper care and housing for the piglets. Given the limited quantity of aid provided, recipients are asked to prepare their own cages, a manageable task. Furthermore, she stressed that the purpose of this aid is not immediate consumption but rather sustainable breeding. She expressed her hope that the recipients of the aid will be able to successfully bred the piglets provided by the government, ultimately rendering Southwest Papua Province self-sufficient in pork production, thereby obviating the need for external sources to meet local demand.
