inp.polri.go.id - Banjarmasin. The South Kalimantan Regional Police's Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team has begun identifying the body of the 10th victim of the Virgo Transport 8 ship that sank in the Java Sea.
The body arrived at Bhayangkara Hospital in Banjarmasin after being evacuated from the sinking site by a joint team.
South Kalimantan Regional Police Public Relations Chief, Senior Superintendent Nur Khamid, stated that the body was immediately handed over to the DVI team for identification.
"One deceased victim, the 10th from the Virgo ship, arrived at Bhayangkara Hospital today and is immediately undergoing identification by the DVI team," said Nur Khamid in Banjarmasin, Sunday (9/20/2026).
He explained that the length of the identification process depends on the condition of the body received by the DVI team.
If the body is intact and easily identifiable, the identification process can be faster. Conversely, if the body is difficult to identify, the team will need more time to confirm its identity.
Therefore, comparative data from family members is crucial in the identification process. The data was collected through an ante-mortem examination before being compared with the results of the post-mortem examination of the body.
"This will be compared with the post-mortem data, or the examination of the body," he explained.
The victim's body was previously recovered by a Basarnas Special Group (BSG) diver team and a joint team on Sunday at around 2:14 PM.
The victim was found while the team was searching inside the ship's hull on the seabed.
After being found, the body was evacuated by lifeboat to the KN SAR Kamajaya. The victim was then flown by Basarnas helicopter HR 3601 to Sjamsudin Noor Air Force Base in Banjarbaru.
From Sjamsudin Noor Air Force Base, the body was then taken to Bhayangkara Hospital in Banjarmasin for identification.
With the discovery of the 10th victim, a total of 118 people have been recovered from the 243 passengers and crew of the Virgo. Of these, 108 were found safe and 10 died.
Meanwhile, another 125 people are still missing. The joint team continues to search for and evacuate those who have not yet been found.
