inp.polri.go.id - Cilacap. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has appealed to all marine service users to be aware of the potential for high waves in the southern seas of West Java, Central Java, and the Special Region of Yogyakarta, especially in the Indian Ocean region.

"Based on the analysis, the height of the sea waves in the Indian Ocean area south of West Java to DIY has the potential to reach a range of 2.5-4 meters, so it is categorized as high waves," said the Head of the BMKG Technician Group of the Tunggul Wulung Cilacap Meteorological Station, Teguh Wardoyo on Saturday (12/7/2024).

In his statement, he said the high waves were triggered by the presence of tropical cyclone seed 91S in the Indian Ocean southwest of Banten, thus triggering an increase in wind speed and wave height.

"The wind movement pattern that tends to be in the same direction with high speed has the potential to increase wave height," he explained.

Furthermore, he said that his party issued an early warning of high waves in the Indian Ocean area south of West Java to DIY which was valid from Saturday (12/7) to Tuesday (12/10), at 07.00 WIB, and will be updated immediately if there are further developments.

In relation to this, he appealed to all maritime service users to pay attention to the high risk of waves to shipping safety because based on analysis, wind speeds of more than 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters pose a risk to fishing boats.

"Meanwhile, tourists on the southern coast of West Java to DIY, especially coastal areas facing the open sea, are advised to remain vigilant even though the wave height in the southern waters of West Java to DIY is currently in the moderate category, which is around 1.25-2.5 meters," he explained.
