Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed on Friday (31/1/2025) that a 6.2 magnitude earthquake west of South Aceh poses no tsunami threat.
BMKG Director for Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Daryono, explained that modeling by BMKG experts ruled out tsunami potential. The quake’s epicenter was located 28 kilometers southwest of Tapaktuan, South Aceh, at a depth of 59 kilometers.
“The earthquake was caused by rock deformation within the Indo-Australian Plate, moving with an oblique-normal mechanism,” said Daryono, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The tremor, recorded at 6.03 pm, was felt across South Aceh, Simeulue, Banda Aceh, and Medan, with intensities ranging from III-IV MMI (felt by many indoors) to II MMI (light vibrations). Three aftershocks followed, the strongest at 3.8 magnitude.
BMKG urged residents to remain calm, avoid misinformation, and stay informed via official BMKG platforms or local disaster agencies.
