inp.polri.go.id - Medan. The North Sumatra Regional Police Mobile Brigade demonstrated a rapid response in handling the massive fire that engulfed PT Garuda Mas Perkasa (Swallow Sandal Factory) on KL.Yos Sudarso street, KM 6.5, Medan Deli District, Medan City, on Wednesday (1/28/2025).
The North Sumatra Regional Police Mobile Brigade's Armored Water Cannon (AWC), known as a tactical crowd control vehicle, was deployed to assist in extinguishing the difficult-to-control fire.
In addition, 20 personnel from the North Sumatra Regional Police Mobile Brigade were also deployed to the scene to provide security and control to the community, ensuring the firefighting process proceeded safely and without disruption.
Based on preliminary information from local residents, the fire is suspected to have been triggered by a short circuit in the electrical wiring in the factory area. However, the exact cause of the fire is still pending the results of an official investigation by the authorities.
The fire reportedly began to grow around 10:00 PM, after smoke was observed billowing from the area at 8:00 PM. Within a short time, the flames spread and engulfed most of the factory building, creating a sea of flames rising high in the middle of the industrial area.
A security officer at the scene reported that several explosions were heard from inside the factory, accompanied by a pungent odor resembling burning rubber that wafted along the surrounding streets.
As of 2:30 a.m., the joint personnel were still working on the ground to ensure the fire was under control and prevented from spreading to surrounding areas.
The Commander of the North Sumatra Regional Police Mobile Brigade Unit, Senior Superintendent Rantau Isnur Eka, emphasized that the deployment was part of their readiness to deal with various emergency situations.
"This demonstrates our alertness when needed quickly, both for security and emergency response, for the sake of public safety and public order stability," he emphasized.
