Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia announced on Tuesday (5/5/2026) that the government is exploring Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a viable alternative to subsidized 3kg LPG tanks to enhance national energy independence by reducing reliance on imported liquefied petroleum gas.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace, Bahlil noted that while CNG is already utilized in the hospitality sector and for the "Makan Bergizi Gratis" (Free Nutritious Meal) program, it is typically stored in larger 10 kg to 20 kg cylinders. The current challenge lies in adapting the technology for smaller 3 kg household units, which must withstand significantly higher pressure, ranging from 200 to 250 bar.

"For the 3kg size, the tanks are in the trial phase because the pressure is quite high. We expect to have the results within the next two to three months," Minister Bahlil said, as cited by antaranews.com.

If the trials prove successful, the government may initiate a gradual conversion for domestic use.

Minister Bahlil highlighted that CNG is approximately 30% cheaper than LPG and utilizes Indonesia's abundant domestic natural gas reserves, including newly discovered fields in East Kalimantan. While the government is finalizing subsidy mechanisms and distribution volumes, the transition is viewed as a strategic move to lower energy costs and bolster the domestic economy.
