Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has confirmed a 5,3 magnitude tectonic earthquake that occurred on Thursday night (28/9/23) in the Banda Sea region of Central Maluku, Maluku. This seismic activity was caused by rock deformation in a subducted plate slab beneath the Banda Sea.
Daryono, the Head of BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Center, affirmed, "The source mechanism analysis results indicate the earthquake had an oblique thrust mechanism."
Earlier, the Banda Sea region of Central Maluku experienced an earthquake, which has now been updated to a magnitude of 5,0 around 9.00 pm.
BMKG's analysis pinpointed the epicenter offshore, located 211 km northwest of Tanimbar, Maluku, at coordinates 6.37° N; 130.28° E, with a depth of 164 km. Daryono noted, "Based on the epicenter location and hypocenter depth, the earthquake was classified as a medium earthquake."
According to shakemap estimations, the earthquake caused tremors in the areas of Amahai, Dawelor Dawera, and Wer Maktian, registering an intensity rating of III on the MMI scale (vibrations were felt in the house or similar to a passing truck).
Daryono clarified, "As of now, there have been no reports of damages caused by the earthquake. The modeling results indicate that this earthquake does not pose any tsunami risk."
BMKG urges the public to remain calm and not be swayed by false rumors. They advised the public to avoid entering buildings that were cracked or damaged.
"Check that your place of residence is structurally safe and can withstand an earthquake or other potential hazards before entering," he advised.
