Inp.polri.go.id - Baturaja. A 65-year-old woman, Sabarti, from Guna Makmur village, Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU), South Sumatra was attacked by a bear while working in a rubber plantation on Saturday morning (4/1/2024).

According to Assistant Inspector Ibnu Holdon, OKU Sub-regional Police Public Relations Officer, the incident occurred in the Suku Ayakh Petaian forest area, where Sabarti and her husband, Sumarjo, were tending their plantation.

A bear emerged from the bushes, attacking Sabarti. Sumarjo attempted to fend off the animal using a wooden stick, allowing her to escape.

Sabarti sustained bite and claw injuries on both legs and was rushed to Pengaringan Health Center for treatment. She is now recovering at home.

Police have launched an investigation at the site and urged residents to exercise caution when working in plantations, as bear sightings in the area, once rare, have reoccurred.

“Residents should remain vigilant to avoid further incidents,” said officer Holdon, as quoted by antaranews.com
