Inp.polri.go.id - Padang. Mount Marapi, located in Agam and Tanah Datar regencies in West Sumatra, erupted on Saturday morning (4/1/2025), spewing volcanic ash 1 kilometer above its summit, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reported.
The eruption occurred at 9.43 am, producing a dense gray ash plume drifting toward the north and northeast, with a recorded seismic amplitude of 30.3 mm and lasting 1 minute 40 seconds. The volcano remains at Alert Level II (Caution), and PVMBG has advised against any activity within a 3-kilometer radius of the Verbeek Crater, according to antaranews.com.
Residents near river valleys originating from Mount Marapi’s summit are also warned about potential lahar flows, especially during heavy rains.
Local leader Firdaus from Bukik Batabuah village noted that the eruption caused loud explosions, prompting some residents to evacuate temporarily.
Previous eruptions since December 2023 have impacted around 500 households, damaged agricultural productivity, and heightened health risks such as respiratory infections.
