Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The European Union (EU) sought a strong and shared desire to deepen relations with Indonesia, especially in the face of current global geopolitical and economic uncertainties.

Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday (16/4/2025), Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade (INTA), Bernd Lange, emphasized that closer EU–Indonesia cooperation is a mutual goal.

“There is a real willingness from all sides to foster closer EU–Indonesia ties, built on shared objectives,” he said, as quoted by antaranews.com.

He highlighted the EU’s commitment to promoting sustainable growth, job creation, and environmental protection in line with the Paris Climate Agreement.  Lange also underlined the importance of finalizing the Indonesia–EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA), which has undergone 19 rounds of negotiations over nearly a decade.

Unlike standard tariff reduction deals, he said, the EU aims for a broader agreement that includes environmental, labor, and sustainability standards. Lange expected that both sides could reach a final agreement by mid-2025.
