Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. France and Australia have formally requested the transfer of their citizens serving sentences in Indonesian prisons, Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra confirmed on Wednesday (20/11/2024).
“We are reviewing these requests and hope to implement the policies soon. President Prabowo Subianto has approved the necessary steps,” he said in a video statement, as quoted by antaranews.com..
Australia’s request was personally delivered by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to President Prabowo during the recent APEC Summit in Peru. France submitted its appeal via a letter from its Justice Minister, coinciding with a similar request from the Philippines regarding Mary Jane Veloso, a death row inmate now approved for transfer.
Minister Yusril emphasized that Indonesia houses many foreign prisoners, serving sentences ranging from fixed terms to life imprisonment and the death penalty. He said that the transfers would enable these prisoners to complete their sentences in their home countries.
“We aim to carry out these transfers by December,” Minister Yusril added, noting that discussions with relevant ministries are ongoing to ensure smooth implementation of the process.
