inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The government is preparing a policy on sugar content labeling for food and beverages and establishing a food safety task force as part of the implementation of Government Regulation (PP) Number 1 of 2026 concerning Food Safety.
"According to reports from various parties, it turns out that many of our young people are already suffering from diabetes," said Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas), Monday (2/9/2026).
He said that attention to sugar consumption has become a prominent issue, following the increase in cases of non-communicable diseases in the community, including among young people.
Zulhas stated that the government will form a cross-ministerial and institutional team to formulate a labeling scheme for food and beverages related to sugar content, so that the public understands the risks before consuming them.
"So, foods and beverages with high sugar content will be labeled so that people know the risks if they drink them," said the Coordinating Minister for Food.
In addition to the labeling policy, the meeting also agreed to establish a food safety task force at the central and regional levels to respond quickly to various issues, including residue cases, food safety concerns, and food emergencies.
He explained that the task force would involve relevant ministries and institutions, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the Ministry of Health, the police, the National Food Agency (Bapanas), and the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM).
Furthermore, the government also discussed structuring the management of processed foods, including processed food products widely distributed among the public, to ensure that all comply with food safety requirements as per applicable regulations.
