Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Health clarified that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been present in Indonesia for years and is not a deadly disease. However, the public is urged to take precautions, such as maintaining proper rest.
"HMPV has been in Indonesia for a long time. It may even be present among some of us experiencing coughs," said Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin on Monday (6/1/2025).
Discovered in 2001, HMPV has circulated globally without causing significant outbreaks. Budi also debunked claims of rising HMPV cases in China, stating it was misinformation. He confirmed the virus prevalent in China is H1N1, a common influenza strain.
To maintain immunity, Minister Budi emphasized healthy habits like sufficient rest and avoiding contact with sick individuals.
"Maintain distance, wash hands, and wear a mask," he said, as quoted by antaranews.com.
Reports of HMPV surges in China have been refuted by the Chinese government and WHO. HMPV remains a non-lethal virus when managed with proper health practices.
