Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Food Agency (Bapanas) has officially declared that Indonesia has achieved food self-sufficiency, with total imports for 11 strategic commodities falling to just 5% of national consumption.
This figure sits well below the 10% maximum import threshold established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to define self-sufficiency.
"The consensus for food self-sufficiency is a maximum of 10% imports; we are currently at 5%," said Andi Amran Sulaiman, the Head of Bapanas and Minister of Agriculture, in Jakarta on Saturday (25/4/2026), as cited by antaranews.com.
Out of a total production of 73.7 million tons across 11 key commodities, including rice, corn, shallots, and poultry, Indonesia only imported roughly 3.5 million tons, primarily consisting of soybeans, garlic, and ruminant meat.
A major driver of this milestone is the record-breaking national rice stock managed by Bulog, which surpassed 5 million tons as of April 23, 2026. This represents a 264.2% increase compared to 2024. With domestic rice production reaching 34.69 million tons against a consumption need of 31.16 million tons, the government confirmed that no rice imports were necessary throughout 2025 and early 2026.
