Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia has become the first country to temporarily block access to Grok, an artificial intelligence chatbot, citing the need to protect public safety and uphold ethics in the digital space.
The decision was taken by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs on Sunday (11/1/2026) in response to the misuse of the platform to generate non-consensual deepfake sexual content.
“Non-consensual sexual deepfakes are a serious violation of human rights and human dignity,” Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid said in an official statement reported by antaranews.com
The temporary suspension aims to protect women, children, and the broader public from the spread of AI-generated fake pornography, which authorities view as a growing threat to privacy and public security.
The ministry has also formally requested clarification and accountability from X, the platform operator, and will conduct further evaluations based on proposed corrective measures. The action is based on Indonesia’s Electronic System Operators Regulation, which obliges platforms to prevent illegal content on their services.
