Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia and 17 other countries have condemned Somaliland’s plan to open an embassy in Jerusalem, saying the move illegal and unacceptable under international law.

“This is a clear violation of international law and UN resolutions, as well as the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem,” the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said  in a statement on Sunday (24/5/2026), as published by antaranews.com.

The joint condemnation was issued by foreign ministers from Indonesia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan, Djibouti, Somalia, Palestine, Oman, Sudan, Yemen, Lebanon, Mauritania, Algeria, Bangladesh, and Kuwait.

The statement reaffirmed that East Jerusalem has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967, and any unilateral attempt to alter its legal status is null and void. The ministers also expressed full support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting Somaliland’s unilateral actions.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized internationally. Israel became the first country to officially recognize Somaliland in December 2025, announcing reciprocal embassy plans in Hargeisa. Indonesia maintains its stance of not recognizing Somaliland, viewing it as an integral part of Somalia.
