Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of an Indonesian who perished from smoke inhalation in a hotel fire in Jashore, Bangladesh, on Monday.
The ministry said that the Indonesian, identified as DU, had arrived in Bangladesh on 1 August 2024 for a business visit.
“DU died from inhaling too much smoke when the hotel he was staying in caught fire amid ongoing unrest,” according to the statement, which was issued on Tuesday (6/8/2024).
The Ministry has contacted DU’s family in Indonesia to extend condolences and facilitate the repatriation of his remains, as reported by antaranews.com.
Indonesians currently in Bangladesh are advised to be vigilant, limit unnecessary outdoor activities, and avoid crowds and protest areas. They should maintain communication and follow emergency guidelines set by the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka.
Indonesians planning to travel to Bangladesh are urged to postpone their trips until the security situation improves.
For assistance, Indonesians may contact the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka at (+880-1-614-444-552) or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Directorate of Citizen Protection at (+62-812-9007-0027).
Recent clashes between security forces and protesters in Bangladesh have resulted in at least 73 deaths, including 14 police officers. The protests, which began following unrest at Dhaka University, oppose a government quota system allocating 30% of public jobs to relatives of 1971 war veterans.
