Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia’s Dragon Boat canoe team has qualified for the 2025 International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Championship after securing medals in the ICF World Cup 2024 held in Yichang, China, from 24 to 27 October 2024.
The team claimed gold in the 200-meter race with a time of 45.903 seconds, narrowly defeating Myanmar, as well as silver in the 2,000-meter and bronze in the 500-meter events.
Indonesia’s team helmsman, Riyan Prasetio, said on Tuesday (29/10/2024) that the team faced a penalty during the 2,000-meter race after a minor collision with India’s boat, which affected their final ranking.
"We tried to overtake India, but contact occurred due to their slow pace," he explained, as reported by antaranews.com.
National coach Mohammad Suryadi noted the team performed admirably despite a short preparation period, as many athletes had just competed in the 2024 PON Games. Indonesia now has strong prospects for qualifying for the 2025 ICF World Games in Chengdu, China, alongside Thailand.
After the Yichang event, the team of 14 athletes will proceed to the ICF World Championship 2024 in Puerto Princesa, Philippines, scheduled for 31 October to3 November 2024, which serves as a qualifier for the World Games.
