Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP) said the enforcement of an Interpol red notice against Sofyan Iskandar Nugroho, an Indonesian citizen convicted of child molestation in the United States, is constrained by international legal rules.
Sofyan, who has been active in Bandung, West Java, was placed under a red notice by Interpol Washington DC in 2016 for offenses committed in California between 2003 and 2010, which expired in April 2022.
“Interpol’s red notice is not binding for any country to take coercive action. Our duty is to report the subject’s presence to the requesting NCB and Interpol Secretariat in Lyon,” said Brigadier General Untung Widyatmoko, the Secretary of NCB Interpol Indonesia, during a hearing at the House of Representatives (DPR) on Monday (22/9/2025), as reported by antaranews.com.
He cited four obstacles, namely Indonesia’s constitutional protection of citizens, the non-mandatory nature of red notices, statute of limitations and unwillingness of the victim to testify, and the U.S. failure to show reciprocity in Indonesia’s requests.
Police are conducting discreet monitoring of Sofyan in Bandung but insist extradition is the only lawful path.
