Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police, the Ministry of Health and the Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) is expected to formulate stricter regulations for nitrous oxide (N2O) to prevent widespread recreational abuse.
Authorities are currently evaluating whether to include the substance in the restrictive annex of the 2009 Narcotics Act following the suspicious death of influencer Lula Lahfah, where a "whip pink" gas canister was seized as evidence.
"We are formulating the inclusion of N2O into the Narcotics Act annex to ensure the Health Law is applied accurately against misuse," Senior Superintendent Zulkarnain Harahap, the INP Criminal Investigation Agency’s Narcotics Deputy Director, said on Friday (30/1/2026),
While N2O is legally used as a medical anesthetic and a food-grade propellant for whipped cream, police warned that using it for euphoria causes severe hypoxia, nerve damage, and potential death.
Investigators found the gas at Lula’s South Jakarta apartment alongside bloodstains, highlighting the lethal risks of "laughing gas" addiction.
