inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police's Water and Air Unit Directorate is investigating the cause of the fire at the state-owned SAR vessel Ramawijaya, which caught fire while at the Muara Baru Shipyard in North Jakarta on Wednesday evening (7/22/2026) at around 7:30 PM.

"The police have taken initial steps by securing the scene, interviewing witnesses, and coordinating with relevant agencies," said the Head of the Sub-Directorate of Law Enforcement at the Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police's Water and Air Unit Directorate, Superintendent Ardhie Demastyo, in Jakarta on Thursday (7/23/2026).

Officers are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. The team has secured the scene, interviewed witnesses, and will coordinate with the police's Identification Team to conduct a thorough crime scene investigation.

"We urge the public not to speculate until the investigation is complete," he said.

Investigators will also examine the procedures for ship repair work that was underway before the fire, including questioning all parties involved in the activity.

"We will investigate all the facts and witness statements to objectively determine the cause of the fire. If any elements of negligence or legal violations are found, we will certainly process them according to applicable regulations," said Ardhie.

Preliminary interrogations with several workers at the site revealed that around 7:00 PM, a worker named Eko, who was replacing the ship, saw sparks coming from the crew's room. He immediately reported the incident to other workers, who then began extinguishing the fire.

Preliminary suspicions are that the sparks originated from the replating activity taking place near the crew's room. Several pieces of work equipment, such as welding machines and grinders, were also located in the room. The workers were reportedly carrying out the work based on a work order (SPK) issued by PT Proskuneo.

Meanwhile, the foreman, Feri, admitted he was not present at the scene at the time of the incident as he was delivering materials. The extinguishing process involved 15 fire trucks being deployed to the scene until the fire was brought under control.
