Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said on Thursday (26/3/2026) that the government may implement a "measured relaxation" of production quotas for coal and nickel, responding to surging global commodity prices triggered by the U.S.-Iran conflict.

"If prices remain stable and favorable, we will introduce a measured relaxation of production planning," he said in a briefing published by the State Secretariat Youtube channel as reported by antaranews.com.

The ministry had originally set the 2026 coal production quota at 600 million tons, which is a significant drop from 2025’s 790 million tons, due to previous oversupply issues. However, the recent blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted global oil and gas distribution, sending coal prices skyrocketing past $130 per ton. 

President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the ministry to optimize state revenue by capturing these "windfall profits." Under the proposed plan, the government will revise the 2026 Work Plan and Budget (RKAB) to adjust production targets while carefully balancing international supply and demand to maintain price stability.
