Inp.polri.go.id - Ternate. The North Maluku Regional Police have questioned nine individuals in connection with the speedboat fire that claimed six lives, including North Maluku gubernatorial candidate Benny Laos. 

The incident occurred during Laos' campaign on Taliabu Island on Saturday.

North Maluku Police Director of General Criminal Investigation Senior Superintendent Asri Effendy, announced on Sunday (13/10/2024) that the authorities have cordoned the scene, interviewed witnesses, and conducted further investigations. 

"Nine witnesses have been questioned regarding the fire that engulfed the speedboat used by Benny Laos' campaign team," he said during a press conference, as reported by antaranews.com.

In addition, forensic experts from North Sulawesi Regional Police and other specialists have been deployed to assist in determining the cause of the fire. The police aim for a swift and thorough investigation, ensuring transparency.

North Maluku Police Head of Public Relations Senior Superintendent Bambang Suharyono urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing. He assured that security forces are working to maintain peace during the local election campaign.

A helicopter from the National Police headquarters has been deployed to help transport Benny Laos' body to Jakarta for further arrangements.
