Inp.polri.go.id - Medan. The North Sumatra Prosecutor's Office is seeking the death penalty for 22 defendants involved in drug-related cases from January to mid-March 2024. Yos A Tarigan, the Head of the Legal Information Section at the North Sumatra Prosecutor's Office, announced this on Sunday (17/3/2024), saying that the demand spans across 28 district prosecutors and nine branch prosecutors in the region. The defendants facing the death penalty include eight from the Medan District Prosecutor's Office, seven from Asahan, four from Tanjungbalai, one each from Langkat, Belawan, and Binjai. Yos emphasized that these severe penalties aim to deter drug trafficking and other criminal activities, citing Law Number 35 of 2009 that mandates capital punishment for serious drug offenses. He stressed the gravity of drug crimes, labeling them "extraordinary crimes" due to the significant harm they cause, particularly to victims and future generations. Yos added that in 2023 alone, the North Sumatra Prosecutor's Office sought the death penalty for 93 individuals involved in drug trafficking. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
