Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  In a monumental victory, Jonatan Christie has shattered Indonesia's three-decade dry spell in the men's singles category at the prestigious All England Open.
Facing off against compatriot Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in Sunday's final (17/3/2024), he secured a win in straight games, with scores of 21-15, 21-14, wrapping up the match in just 54 minutes. His triumph not only ended a drought dating back to 1994, when Hariyanto Arbi last claimed the title at All England but also marked Jonatan's inaugural qualification as a finalist and his triumphant return home with the coveted BWF Super 1000 tournament trophy. The intensity of the match was palpable from the outset, with both players fiercely battling for points, particularly in the early exchanges. However, Jonatan quickly asserted dominance, seizing an 11-4 lead at the interval and maintaining it to stretch his advantage over Ginting to 16-10. A standout feature of this all-Indonesian final was the resilience displayed by both players, evident in the extended rallies that defined point distribution. Ginting managed to secure a 37-shot rally in the first game, notching three consecutive points and narrowing the deficit to 13-17. As the match progressed, Ginting, trailing closely behind Jonatan, appeared eager to level the score. However, Jonatan remained composed, ultimately clinching the first game 21-15 in just 29 minutes. During the interval before the second game, Ginting received medical attention for a minor finger injury. Nonetheless, this did not deter the fifth-seeded player's determination to claim the championship title from his compatriot. The second game began with Ginting securing the initial point, but Jonatan swiftly countered, turning the momentum in his favor. Despite briefly trailing 6-10, Ginting's swift shots narrowed the gap. Nevertheless, Jonatan once again seized control, leading 11-9 at the interval. Despite Ginting's valiant efforts, Jonatan maintained his lead at 18-14, ultimately emerging victorious in this historic badminton championship against his former roommate. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
