Paniai Sub-regional Police Chief SuperintendentAbdus Syukur confirmed on Thursday (2/5/2024) that the area's security has stabilized after an attack by the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) on a patrol from the 527th Infantry Battalion near Bibida Village, Bibida District in Central Papua.
"While the security situation in Paniai regency remains relatively safe, the military and police officers remain vigilant," he said, as reported by antaranews.com..
Bibida Village is located approximately 20 minutes away from Enarotali, the regency's capital.
Local residents had returned home following a brief evacuation during the gunfire exchange.
Regarding a civilian handed over to the military, Chief Abdus confirmed his custody and ongoing investigation to determine any involvement with armed groups.
"We're still investigating his involvement. If no indication is found, we will release him; however, if there's evidence of association with the KKB, he will face legal proceedings," he explained.
