Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia clarified on Saturday (28/6/2025) that oil well permits under the new regulation are only granted to long-operating community-run wells—not new ones.

“This only applies to those already running. Don’t get it wrong,” he said, as quoted by antaranews.com

Energy and Mineral Resources Ministerial Regulation No. 14 of 2025 provides legal status to small-scale oil wells that have been operating informally, aiming to protect the environment and shield communities from legal risks.

“These community wells produce 15,000 to 20,000 barrels per day. Without legal recognition, these operations face constant legal threats,” Minister Bahlil added.

Previously, much of the oil was sold to unauthorized buyers. The regulation mandates partnerships with official oil companies and enforces stricter oversight.

In Musi Banyuasin, South Sumatra alone, over 7,700 wells involve more than 230,000 locals. The new rule aims to ensure legal, safe, and environmentally responsible operations.
