Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. State-owned energy company PT Pertamina announced a major breakthrough in Riau’s Rokan Block, identifying up to 724 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) in unconventional hydrocarbon reserves.
The discovery is expected to boost national energy production capacity amid declining legacy output.
“We successfully discovered the largest finding in the last 10 years. We identified unconventional oil and gas in the Rokan Block with a potential of 724 million barrels,” said Pertamina Vice President Director Oki Muraza during a hearing with Commission VI of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday (19/11/2025), as reported by antaranws.com.
He added that the discovery comes from only one geological structure, suggesting additional potential. Oki noted that Indonesia’s unconventional reserves could be “far greater” and represent one of Pertamina Group’s largest-ever finds.
Pertamina is simultaneously developing green energy initiatives, including producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at 9,000 barrels per day and converting refineries to co-process waste cooking oil. The company is also building a hydrogen pilot plant in Lampung and expanding geothermal, ethanol-based fuel, and logistical infrastructure.
