The South Kalimantan Regional Police successfully cooled peatland temperatures using an innovative, environmentally friendly, plant-based surfactant solution developed by the South Kalimantan Regional Police's Forensic Laboratory (Bidlabfor) to extinguish a 900-hectare land fire in Pengayuan, South Landasan Ulin Village, Banjarbaru.
"This solution, combined with a two-meter-long pipe injection method, completely extinguished the embers and cooled the ground more quickly," said South Kalimantan Regional Police Chief Inspector General Rosyanto Yudha Hermawan in Banjarbaru.
Yudha stated that the innovation proved effective based on thermal drone monitoring at the site. As reported by Antara on Friday (9/4/2026),
At the initial location where the pipe was installed, the peatland temperature was detected to be 120 degrees Celsius.
However, after injecting the surfactant solution through the pipe for one minute, the temperature immediately dropped to around 30 degrees Celsius.
Yudha stated that the rapid temperature drop was a strong indicator of the high effectiveness of the peat injection method with a special liquid in extinguishing underground fires.
The innovative MES surfactant liquid, made from vegetable oil, has been proven to penetrate peat soil much faster and absorb into it more quickly than ordinary water or detergent.
Yudha instructed the South Kalimantan Regional Police's Forensic Laboratory Unit to immediately mass-produce the peatland extinguishing liquid formula.
He also ordered the standardization of the undercooling pipe system so that it can be implemented widely by all Forest and Land Fire Task Forces in South Kalimantan.
