Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has officially announced an end of the national COVID-19 pandemic status. Delivering the news through the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel, President Jokowi emphasized that the country is now transitioning into an endemic phase.

"Starting today, Wednesday (21/6/23), the government has decided to revoke the pandemic status, and we are transitioning into an endemic phase," he stated.

This decision comes as a result of several positive factors, including a notable decline in daily and active COVID-19 cases, coupled with the extensive vaccination campaign carried out across the nation. However, despite the shift in status, the President urged the public to maintain a vigilant and health-conscious approach to their daily lives.

Since its declaration as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020, COVID-19 has posed a formidable global health crisis. Although the WHO recently terminated the public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) status related to COVID-19, the organization still recognizes the virus as a pandemic as of June 2023.

However, the revocation of the pandemic status means that individuals affected by COVID-19 will now be responsible for covering the associated costs. President Jokowi issued a cautionary reminder, stating, "As we transition into the endemic phase, be mindful that if you contract COVID-19, you will bear the expenses. While the government currently covers these costs, once we enter the endemic phase, it is crucial to recognize that treatment for COVID-19 will incur personal expenses. This is the consequence."
